Culture, in its most basic form, is practiced at the family level. Many people may share a common religion, nationality, diet, or holiday. Your family has a culture, which while similar to other families, has unique differences. The assignment that you are undertaking is to create a Culture Kit. You will be sharing certain elements of your culture with your classmates so that they may better understand your background. A Culture Kit is created using a nicely decorated box to hold artifacts which represent your culture. The box and the importance of the artifacts will be explained to your classmates. In addition, you will give a presentation about the items you’ve chosen; explaining what the item is and its significance to you and your culture. The design of the box should reflect your heritage as well.
Project Requirements
A box, medium to large in size, depending on your choice of artifacts (preferably one that can close, or has a lid, so as to protect the artifacts). Shoeboxes are always popular provided everything will fit inside of it. The box must be covered and decorated to reflect your heritage. Symbols, words, pictures, maps, and flags are normally informative and colorful. Do not decorate your box with the actual artifacts.
Eight artifacts (an artifact should be an object that can be held and passed around for closer viewing) that are representative of the culture you have chosen. Have a description of each artifact, including where it came from, what it means in terms of the culture, and any personal or sentimental value, etc. This will be the basis of your presentation to the class when you explain the objects. The more thorough the explanation, the better you will do. If an artifact is too large to fit in the box, you may bring it in separately.
*Please refrain from including valuables (jewelry, watches, money, etc) and anything that may pose a safety issue.
Have your speech prepared on index cards. Practice at home before you make your presentation to the class. You will proudly be showing the class the wonders of your culture!
The entire project isdue June 2, 2017. Any project handed in after that will be penalized accordingly (five points per day). Culture Kit Rubric
